So here's an excerpt from one of my old "Learn VNSim" blogs trying to clear this up. Word clouds are a tool for visualizing large sets of data. Word clouds are created with publicly available tools, such as "wordle". If you have words, they will be used to create word clouds. Over time, these word clouds become iconic representations of data sets. They form part of the way we perceive the data they represent. I think it'd be great to have a whole series on word clouds or visualizations of any kind; feel free to suggest some ideas. I'd be happy to do it if anyone is interested in collaborating on the topic. Now, I said that "word clouds are created with publicly available tools". What does that mean? It means that anyone can create their own word cloud. Some people have created their own word clouds by combining available sources, but they are not always good. Using publicly shared word clouds can give you a much better idea of what words are being used in a data set. The only exception would be if you have your own unpublished tool for creating word clouds, but I don't think that's generally the case. This also gives the possibility of "manipulating" word clouds to create new visualizations. It's really exciting! But, the world of online tools is quite young, so there are already tons of word clouds out there that can be easily manipulated. You can use Google Images Search to find examples, but you should do some research beforehand to see if it is something you can pull off in your own tool. In any case, the point of this blog was to explain what a word cloud is and how it works. I'll leave creating your own unique word cloud as an exercise to the reader . cfa1e77820
